Salvatore Annerino served a 20 year (1985-2005) career in the New York City Department of Sanitation, with the bulk of that time spent as a District Superintendent. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Mr. Annerino distinguished himself for his dedicated work in the recovery and cleanup efforts. He worked in and around Ground Zero from from September 12, 2001 until the last piece of steel was removed many months later. As the founder and managing editor of the WTC DSNY Emergency Response Division pages on Facebook, Mr. Annerino keeps Sanitation personnel, their families, and their loved ones informed about the long-term consequences of the 9/11 work. This includes maintaining and updating a list of all those who have died of September 11-related illnesses.
In this interview, Mr. Annerino recounts his personal experiences in the recovery work, as well as his continuing efforts to document and remember the personal tolls which the 9/11 attacks continue to inflict.
